In order to raise funds for the Mayor of Broxtowe’s Charity our Development Contractor, Neil Clurow, completed the Cycling Challenge on 23rd January riding from the Dunes of Maspalomas to the summit of Pico de as Nieves in Gran Canaria. The 60 mile ride to the summit and back took Neil 5 hours and 3 minutes climbing to a Garmin registered 1,943 meters and cycling a combined elevation gain of 2,813 meters.
Neil is hoping that his effort will highlight the important work of Citizens Advice Broxtowe and the money raised will go towards providing the support local people need in times of crisis. He also wishes to highlight the beautiful island of Gran Canaria. Neil who has links to the island comments, “the wonderful people of Gran Canaria have suffered so much during the pandemic with it’s economy devastated by the virtual cancellation of international tourism. Hopefully people will be inspired to visit the island once tourism is resumed”
The route took Neil from sea level in Maspalomas through the beautiful mountain villages, including Fataga, San Bartolomé and past the famous Roque Nublo at 1,813 meters where the road is at its steepest, over 20% in places.
